REAL Hip Hop Classes in Charlotte NC – FunkyTown Parties

What is REAL Hip Hop?? The hip hop culture is a form of musical, physical and artistic expression.  It has 4 main pillars: MCing, DJ-ing, breaking and graffiti writing.  Dance is a huge part of the hip hop culture, the foundation includes techniques of steppin’, poppin, toprock, gliding, music-video-style, and some simple floor work.  The foundation of hip hop dance is breakdancing or B-boying.  Breakdancing involves a frenetic, but incredibly controlled, style of dancing that highlights strength and dynamic movement of the body, matching the beats laid out by DJs or beatboxers. Often breakdancing is done in a battle format, with various competitors facing off by showing their skills and trying to one-up each other.

Most dance studios teach “street jazz” and call it hip hop or breakdancing, while having little to no knowledge of the history or foundation of true hip hop culture. Be selective on where you take your hip hop and breakdancing classes you wouldn’t take your ballet classes from someone with no knowledge of the steps or skill, and so your ‘hip hop’ and ‘breakdance’ classes should be the same! And if your kids are looking for a fun, safe, and exciting environment to learn, then FunkyTown is the place for them!! Amazing Dubstep Dancing

By Party Chick

I don’t think I’ve ever met one person who does not love watch a homie breakdown into dance mode. Dubstep dance is becoming more popularized as the music continues to spread uncontrollably. Check out this video, I know what you are thinking…what’s he made out of? Are his bones part rubber?

Dubstep dancing is a cross between break dancing, the funky disco robot, and pop & lock. To dance this was is not magic and it can’t happen overnight, what you need  are classes and a lot of practice. 10 Most Popular Hip Hop Dance Moves

by Party Chick

Since the mid 80s, hip hop dance has been, without a doubt, the most popular youth dance form of the last couple decades.

With so many styles, such as popping, locking, breakdancing, krumping and robotting it is hard to choose. Here are my top ten best and most popular hip hop dance moves. Let’s break it down!

10. Arm wave

Popping is a huge part of hip hop dancing. The wave is one of the most popular popping moves.  The body wave, particularly the “arm wave,” has been a huge for most poppers, allowing them to use various combinations to create dazzling displays of rhythm and groove.

9. Six-step

Introducing the first dance move most b-boys ever learn! The “six-step” is the most staple, fundamental footwork of a breakdancer’s downrock (floor routine) before jumping into more difficult moves.

8. Windmill

This is very popular dance move was actually invented from a mistake. A b-boy was struggling to perform another move, the baby freeze, but happened to fall on his arm and roll, hence giving birth to the “windmill.” Let’s hope he didn’t roll anything else.

7. Running man

This has been around for close to 20 years and you can’t deny that it’s one of the most influential hip hop dance moves of all time, thanks to MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice is the “running man” is fairly easy.

6. Toprock

Top Rock is a major element of b-boying. It consists to a string of steps performed in a standing position relying on a mixture of coordination, flexibility, rhythm is. It is usually the first and foremost opening display of style, and it serves as a warm-up for b-boying and floor work.

5. Freeze

One of the greatest moves in breakdance is known as the “freeze,” which is usually an exclamation mark to end a dancer’s routine. In this move, the dancer “freezes” into a pose, suspending himself either on his head, shoulders but rarely his feet. The freeze can be very dangerous if the dancer “thaws” too soon, yet, all quite exciting to watch if the dancer executes them well.

4. The Crip

Also known as the “C-Walk,” this move is tricky, yet after the basics are learned, it can be quite easy. Not many know how impressive this move is. In fact, this move has opened so many doors to other elaborate footwork patterns.

3. Chest Pop

The “chest pop” or “chest hit,” is a dance move where a dancer physically mimics his own heart beat pulsating inside his chest.

2. Turtle

You have to be strong to do the “turtle”.  Only the better b-boys can do the turtle, but only the best b-boys can do it well.

1. The Moonwalk

That’s one small step for Michael Jackson, one giant leap for anyone else. Popularized by the King of Pop, the “moonwalk” remains one of the smoothest moves of the last century and a perfect thriller for an oiled dance floor.
